Stow House is a private residence located in south Sri Lanka, occupying the slopes of a dramatic peninsula overlooking the Indian Ocean. The house evolved through the Clients request to connect the house to the exterior, which to them is the most important element of the project. The house contains no glass or windows, only large doors and operable louvred panels.
The design maximises the expansive ocean views offered by the steeply sloping site. Cutting into the site, the impact of the house's mass is minimized both from the ocean view and upon arrival from the landside. The cantilevered form is covered by a mono-pitch roof which serves to protect the entrance to the house from the elements and allows rainwater to be harvested. The covered roof terrace is utilized as an outdoor lounge providing magnificent ocean views.
